Practical guides for selling to Japan — written by someone who does the paperwork.

Japan is one of your top three markets and your payout stopped matching your price. Here is what sits between the store price and your bank account.

Guides for this situation are being written. The first ones cover the consumption-tax treatment of store revenue as the platforms publish it, the withholding paperwork, and what a Japanese store listing needs beyond a translation.

If you want to be told as they go up, the newsletter at the bottom of this page is the way. If you have a question that is not answered anywhere in public, send it — unanswered questions are where every guide here starts.

The order things happen in Japan

  1. Step 1

    Set the price / 価格設定

A yen price is read as a yen price, not as a conversion of a dollar price. Tiers ending in awkward numbers read as an afterthought.

  2. Step 2

    Store commission / 手数料

The platform's cut comes off first, and the rate depends on which programme you are in.

  3. Step 3

    Consumption tax / 消費税

Who remits Japanese consumption tax on a store sale, and whether it comes out of your share, depends on the platform's published terms.

  4. Step 4

    Withholding / 源泉徴収

Some payouts arrive reduced by withholding until the right tax-residency paperwork is on file with the paying party.

  5. Step 5

    Store listing / ストア掲載

Machine-translated listings and missing statutory disclosures both cost installs, in different ways.

  6. Step 6

    Support / サポート

Japanese reviews punish slow or blunt replies harder than most markets.

What Japanese companies expect from you

  • A price that looks like it was chosen for Japan, not converted into it.
  • The statutory commercial disclosures where the store requires them.
  • A Japanese listing that reads as if a person wrote it, because the first two lines decide the install.
  • A support reply within a business day, opening with an apology for the trouble rather than an explanation.
  • Screenshots with Japanese UI, not English UI with a Japanese caption.
